It is important to know about the feeding habits of your pet python because it reflects on your pet’s health and longevity by impacting on its eating habits. Here, I have discussed some important points about feeding your pet python.

Pythons make wonderful pets. This is very true and can be verified from the fact that every year there are so many new python owners.

But there is a sad downside. Many of these newly acquired pythons die because the pet owners do not have full knowledge as to how and what to feed the pythons.

You may say to yourself: "My goodness, I didn't know so many things could pose a danger to a python's life".

And some people even believe that ball pythons don't really need to eat; not true!

All animals have to eat to live. Ball pythons, especially the wild caught ones, may be reluctant eaters, and fast for long periods of time, because they don't recognize the mice we provide them as being food.

Just being alive, however, burns many calories, and if they don't eat to replenish those calories, they will die. Ball pythons DO have to eat, ...one must be patient and keep trying with fresh prey.

As a rule avoid live prey. You may be exposing your pet to prey attack and injury. The choice of most breeders is pre-killed or highly stunned prey.

Make sure the food you give is free of any kind of infections, as this could lead to health hazards including death in the extreme.

(Most of the squirrels and sparrows available in pet food markets suffer from internal parasites.)

Other pythons die because of lack of knowledge of appropriate Cage Temperatures. Improper cage temperatures may cause respiratory diseases ... make sure you know the right temperature for your species of python.

At first, all the possible pitfalls may seem overwhelming; but rest assured they are easily

mastered, with only a little study.

Owning a python can be a wonderful, life-enriching experience when one is willing

to adopt the role of a loving protector. This is the spirit in which I write to you.
